- The journal article by Wilson Miranda A Long Car Trip with Your Family Can Lead You to the Emergency Department: A Case Report The case presented here illustrates the usefulness of echocardiography in the assessment of patients with pulmonary embolism. In addition to providing information regarding right ventricular function and pulmonary pressure, it caught an impending paradoxical embolism (IPDE) in the act as it traversed through a patent foramen ovale. Recognition of this unusual entity and the appreciation of its clinical implications by the sonographer led to the activation of the appropriate treatment pathway, which may have saved the patient from catastrophic complications.
